Zimbabwean President Calls on Africa to Stop Exporting Rough Diamonds
Zimbabwe's online media recently published an article expressing Zimbabwe's President Mnangagwa's idea of "urging African countries to stop exporting uncut rough diamonds.
Mnangagwa expressed this view at a special meeting of the African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA:AfricanDiamond Producers Association). He believes that African countries have produced 60% diamonds in the world, so it is inappropriate to continue to export large quantities of rough diamonds. Now countries should strengthen communication to enhance their interests and position in the value chain.
In order to achieve this goal, Mnangagwa believes that Africa should continue to strengthen infrastructure and train more artisans to increase the production of finished jewelry. "This will be a long-term process, and the direction of its efforts is to turn Africa into a concentration of diamond cutting and grinding."
Zimbabwe currently holds the rotating presidency of the ADPA. (Source: Diamond Watch)
